Hinkley keeps watch on ruck hopefuls

PORT Adelaide will today learn more about the three-man race for the No. 1 ruck spot as the Power plays Melbourne in a practice match in the Riverland.

The Renmark Oval game this afternoon is Matthew Lobbe's first under new Power coach Ken Hinkley, who has wiped previous rap sheets of his players.

Hinkley will have three more chances to watch the form of Lobbe, Jarrad Redden and Hawthorn premiership player Brent Renouf as they compete for the lead ruck role.

Renouf, who is back in full training, is expected to play next week in Alice Springs or in the following week's practice match, which is yet to be organised against a club not in the NAB Cup grand final.

Assistant coach and former Crows premiership ruckman Shaun Rehn cannot wait to have a full arsenal of ruckmen, with Justin Westhoff and Jackson Trengove - who is acting captain against the Demons today - also able to help out with the ball-ups.

"I just want all three of them to have a crack at it," Rehn said.

"It makes a difference when you have a lot of big men up and running."

Rehn and Hinkley will closely scrutinise the ruck position over the next few weeks in a process that is also designed around learning more about the greener players on the list.

This showed in team selection ahead of today, with such players as Kane Cornes, the two Eberts (Brad and Brett), captain Travis Cornes, leading goalkicker Jay Schulz and full back Alipate "Bobby" Carlile given a day off.

"We're really keen to see him play with big `Reddo' (Redden) and get them in the ruck together and see how they go," Hinkley said.

"We need to get big `Roofy' (Renouf) back on the park.

"And look, he's right back into training now so we're excited about what he's been able to do," he said.

"It makes a pretty big difference to what you can do ... nice to have some ruckmen available."
